Baby Model

My friend Rita, a photographer, has been waiting to take newborn pictures of Avery almost since she found out I was pregnant. Today she came over and spent two hours "playing" with the baby. This is a very unexciting video of Rita (no offense to her of course) trying to adjust a flower headband on the baby for a picture, but it is the first video I have taken of her. I can't wait to see the pictures.

Game Boy

Last night we all hung out in the family room watching TV. I was online ordering the stroller we needed to hold both kids and Miles jumped on my lap. He started messing around with the touch pad mouse on the lap top and I told him if he waited until I was done he could go to a kid's website and play around with it there.

After I finished, I logged into Noggin for him. It is a web page derived from a TV channel that shows only kid's programming. Miles knows most of the shows there and almost all of the characters. The web site has games, videos and interactive tools for kids.

I only spent maybe 10 minutes teaching Miles how to navigate with the touch pad mouse and he was off and running, pointing and clicking, everywhere. Finally, I asked if he wanted to play a game and I let him choose one. He settled on a Diego matching game and after it loaded we read the directions so he could get started. I helped with the first round at least with limited instructions on how to continue using the mouse correctly and he played the game mostly unassisted.

It was time for me to feed the baby, so Daddy stepped in and they played a Lazy Town online board game. Both of us were shocked how quickly Miles took to the computer. Within minutes of Chris' tutorial, Miles was playing all by himself; listening and following the directions and actually playing an entire game without help.

I'm not a fan of video games, especially because, boys specifically, will spend a majority of their adolescence glued to someone's TV playing them, so up until know I have avoided introducing them. And the few times Miles and I have gone to the Noggin web site in the past, I ended up doing most of the work while he quickly lost interest. I guess I just assumed the computer would be something we would tackle when he got a little bit older and that he couldn't possibly pick it up at three years old. It will teach me not to underestimate my own kid.

He sat and played at least four games all alone and even though the games are easy enough he still mastered all of the learning skills he was challenged with including an online puzzle where you had to click on the pieces to move them, line them up and then drop them into their correct spot on the board. I hate to brag, because I think it is more shock than anything, but we were so impressed. Way to go Miles!!
