Learning Machine

This was Miles first week of school. All went well with the exception of the pouting in the corner that apparently happened when toys were not readily available, a small glitch in the life of an only child. But a few weeks of structure will hopefully change that.

Last night, we were all hanging out in the family room when Miles stopped playing and came up to me with his "thought for the day":
"mikeywa"
To which I replied, "What was that honey?"
Miles - "mikeywa"
Again my reply, "I don't understand.........Mickey Mouse?"
Miles - "no, mikeywa"
Me - Long pause......
Miles again - "mikeywa, in da guy"
Me - Another long pause......
Me - "Are you saying, Milky Way?"
Miles - "Yeah, in da guy! Mikeywa, in da guy!" and he runs over to the sliding glass door and points up to the stars in the sky and repeats himself again.
"Are you saying 'Milky Way, in the sky'?"
"Yeah" and he taps his pointed finger on the glass again.

Completely overwhelmed by his stroke of genius, I googled "milky way" in Google Images with Miles on my lap and of all the pictures that came up, this is the one he pointed at:

Miles - "Ya, dat da mikeywa mama! In da guy!"

I quickly called Chris over and we both took a few moments to be stunned by our little Einstein and then were sharply brought back to reality when we posed the question,
"Where did you learn that?"
The return answer was, "I dunno".
Us - " Did you learn that in school?"
Miles - blank stare
Us - "Was that something you learned in school?"
Miles - shoulder shrug - proceeds to turn around and walk back to toys as we are apparently boring him now.
Okay, so he's still almost 3 but it's good to know that there is smart kid in there somewhere. The only thing that confuses me is where he really did learn that, since the theme this week at school was "Dinosaurs" and he clearly recognized the Milky Way from the pictures......hmmmmm! It will continue to remain a mystery.

First Day of School

Miles had his first day of school today. He is going to St. Thomas Aquinas a preschool by our house. His friend Tyler goes there as well. He was supposed to be in Tyler's class, but it was full, so they put him in the 3 year old group even though he is still 2. They said since his birthday is in a month it would be just fine. We have been telling Miles for days that he starts school today with his teachers Ms. Kari and Ms. Kelly. In turn he tells everyone that he is going to TyTy's school. He was very excited. I woke him up at 8:15 this morning and the first thing he said was, "I go to school today, Mama?"

Chris and I both took him down there and dropped him off. We signed him in and showed him to his classroom and introduced his teachers. Ms. Kelly asked him if he liked legos and that was the last we saw of him........so sad! It was the longest 3 hours I've ever waited!!!

Ready to go!

Miles new backpack. Such a big boy!!

All done!

Miles teachers said he had a great first day!

Mr. Independent

Miles said they made dinosaurs out of play-doh, had snack time, played on the playground and played with Thomas the Train books and toys. In his backpack was a folder with info for us and a piece of paper with a couple of random rectangles glued to it and some very sparse crayon marks. It said "Miles Rectangle-asaurus". Apparently he made it. Hopefully he will take a better interest in his creative side as time goes on, because so far it has been a No-Go! Although his teachers said he did great and were surprised he had never been in school before, our excitement was soon diminished by the moody, whiny kid we had to endure on the ride home. Some things will never change!
